Interactive Heritage Atlas Expands Across Transylvania, Mapping UNESCO Sites and Historic Landmarks

The digital atlas brings together UNESCO World Heritage sites, archaeological landmarks, medieval monuments and industrial heritage across Transylvania.

CăLAN, HUNEDOARA, ROMANIA, September 15, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — The Interactive Heritage Atlas developed by Info Călan has expanded beyond its original focus on Călan, the Strei Valley and neighbouring areas of Hunedoara County, adding UNESCO World Heritage properties and other historic sites from across Transylvania.

The new additions include the Historic Centre of Sighișoara, the Roșia Montană Mining Landscape and the seven components of the UNESCO World Heritage property Villages with Fortified Churches in Transylvania. Biertan, Viscri, Prejmer, Câlnic, Saschiz, Valea Viilor and Dârjiu are now represented alongside sites already mapped in Hunedoara.

The atlas also includes all six components of the Dacian Fortresses of the Orăștie Mountains: Sarmizegetusa Regia, Costești-Cetățuie, Costești-Blidaru, Luncani-Piatra Roșie, Bănița and Căpâlna. Their inclusion links the original concentration of sites in Hunedoara with the atlas’s broader coverage of Transylvania.

Beyond UNESCO-listed properties, the map covers archaeological sites, Roman remains, medieval churches, fortifications, historic settlements, industrial heritage and natural landmarks. Locations can be searched by name or settlement and filtered by category, allowing sites from different periods to be explored within the same landscape.

Some entries cover well-known monuments, while others identify places that remain little known outside archaeological inventories, academic studies and official heritage registers. Among the locations already mapped are the medieval churches of Strei, Streisângeorgiu, Densuș, Ostrov and Sântămăria-Orlea, the Roman site at Aquae, the archaeological sites of Măgura Călanului and La Podină, and places associated with the industrial history of Călan.

Each point on the map includes a short description. Where Info Călan has published a dedicated article, the entry also provides access to more detailed historical or archaeological information.

“The atlas began with sites around Călan and the Strei Valley. As the map grew, it became clear that they belonged to a wider historical landscape extending towards the Hațeg region, the Orăștie Mountains and other parts of Transylvania. The current expansion follows those historical and geographical connections rather than present-day administrative boundaries,” said Daniel Lăcătuș, who initiated the project.

The original concentration of sites in southern Hunedoara remains an important part of the map. In this relatively compact area, prehistoric settlements, Dacian fortresses, Roman remains, medieval monuments and traces of modern industrialisation can be found within the same landscape. Adding locations from other counties now places these sites within a wider Transylvanian context.

The atlas remains in development. New locations are added progressively, while existing entries are expanded with further information and links to dedicated articles. The map is designed to accommodate additional regions without separating archaeological, architectural and industrial heritage into different projects.

The Interactive Heritage Atlas is published by Info Călan, a Romanian online publication launched in 2026. Alongside local news, it publishes material on history, archaeology, historic monuments, industrial heritage and the history of communities in Hunedoara and other parts of Transylvania.
