Turnkey design, site acquisition and construction services support nationwide deployment of MidWave’s licensed MANET communications platform

VIENNA, Va., Sept. 10, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Wavsys today announced its work with MidWave Wireless, Inc. (“MidWave”) to design and build the network infrastructure supporting Project Fortis™, MidWave’s resilient communications network now being launched across 18 markets in the United States and its territories.

Project Fortis brings military-proven Mobile Ad Hoc Networking (MANET) capabilities to MidWave’s licensed 1.4 GHz and 1.7 GHz spectrum platform, creating an autonomous, self-forming and self-healing communications layer designed to complement existing LTE and 5G infrastructure. The network has been deployed across MidWave’s 18-market footprint and is being placed into operational service to support public safety, critical infrastructure, government and commercial applications.

Wavsys has served as a key deployment partner for Project Fortis, utilizing its turnkey Professional Services model to provide a single point of accountability across the project lifecycle. Wavsys has coordinated site design, site acquisition and construction across MidWave’s geographically diverse network footprint, providing the infrastructure deployment capabilities necessary to bring Project Fortis into operational service at scale.

“Project Fortis demonstrates what is possible when innovative wireless technology is paired with disciplined execution in the field,” said Joshua Mangerson, Managing Partner of Wavsys. “We are proud to partner with MidWave in deploying the resilient infrastructure that supports this important new communications platform. Bringing a coordinated network into service across 18 markets requires speed, consistency and accountability, and that is precisely what our turnkey Professional Services model is designed to provide.”

Project Fortis combines MidWave’s licensed spectrum platform with advanced MANET technology supplied by Trellisware Technologies. Unlike conventional wireless networks that depend upon centralized infrastructure, backhaul and core network resources, MANET systems can establish communications directly among participating radios and dynamically route traffic across the network. This enables communications to continue locally even when traditional infrastructure is impaired or unavailable.

Designed to operate alongside existing LTE and 5G networks, Project Fortis provides an additional layer of communications resilience and local autonomy. Under normal conditions, the system can integrate with conventional carrier infrastructure and cloud-based services. When that infrastructure is degraded or unavailable, the network can operate autonomously, preserving local communications without reliance on centralized control, backhaul or core network resources.

Project Fortis is designed to support a broad range of mission-critical applications, including push-to-talk communications, real-time situational awareness, team and asset tracking, collaborative mapping, sensor integration and video distribution. Potential users include public safety and emergency response organizations, government agencies, utilities, transportation systems, industrial operators and other organizations for which communications continuity is critical.

“Wavsys has been an important partner in taking Project Fortis from network design to operational infrastructure across the country,” said John Kneuer, Chief Executive Officer of MidWave Wireless. “Executing a coordinated deployment across 18 geographically dispersed markets is a significant undertaking. Wavsys has provided the site design, acquisition and construction capabilities necessary to help us translate our spectrum and technology platform into an operating communications network.”

MidWave’s nationwide 1.4 GHz spectrum holdings provide Project Fortis with a common spectrum architecture across the United States and its territories, while MidWave’s regional 1.7 GHz spectrum assets provide additional capacity in key metropolitan markets. These spectrum resources are well suited to wide-area MANET operations and enable MidWave to provide a common resilient communications architecture across its network footprint.
