Dr. Ray Simpkin
Simpkin brings more than four decades of applied research experience across private-sector and government institutions in the United Kingdom and New Zealand, with deep expertise in long-range wireless power transfer, electromagnetics, microwave engineering, and materials science. Since 2019, his career has focused on advancing technologies directly relevant to RF-based power beaming, including system design, applied physics, and the translation of research into practical engineering concepts.
Based in Auckland, New Zealand, Simpkin most recently served as Chief Science Officer at EMROD, where he helped advance microwave-based power beaming technologies. Since 2025, he has also worked as an independent science and engineering consultant focused primarily on long-range wireless power transfer.
In 2020, Simpkin received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Science New Zealand, recognizing sustained excellence and leadership in scientific research. He holds a BSc in physics with first-class honors and a PhD in electromagnetics, both from Imperial College London. He has been a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) since 1996, including the Microwave Theory and Techniques Society and Antennas and Propagation Society, and remains an active referee for microwave engineering and physics journals. He has authored or co-authored more than 40 publications and is the named inventor on more than 30 patent applications.
“Ray is one of the world’s preeminent experts in power beaming,” said Chris Davlantes, Founder and CEO of Reach Power. “His experience across electromagnetics, microwave systems, and real-world power beaming development will be invaluable as Reach continues to mature wireless power-at-a-distance for defense, industrial, robotics, and autonomous systems applications.”
Reach is developing wireless power systems designed to deliver energy to authorized receivers without physical contact, fixed charging pads, or manual battery swaps. The company’s work focuses on enabling persistent operation for drones, sensors, robots, and connected devices across defense, industrial automation, logistics, smart infrastructure, and other environments where power availability can limit performance.
“I’m excited to support Reach as the company advances practical wireless power systems for real-world use cases,” said Dr. Ray Simpkin. “Long-range wireless power transfer has significant potential across autonomy, sensing, robotics, and distributed infrastructure, and Reach is taking an important approach to making that capability useful outside the lab.”
Simpkin’s appointment expands Reach’s advisory network as the company continues to advance wireless power-at-a-distance from demonstration toward deployment.
About Reach
Reach develops wireless power-beaming systems that deliver safe, targeted RF energy over distance — keeping drones, unattended ground sensors, ground robots, and other autonomous systems continuously operational without cables or battery swaps. The technology reduces logistics burden and supply chain risk across defense, public safety, and industrial markets.
