The 2026 State of AI in Education report benchmarks the fastest classroom-tech shift ever — and the governance gap it left behind.
AMBLER, PA, UNITED STATES, August 14, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Artificial intelligence went from novelty to norm in America’s classrooms in about two years. According to the 2026 State of AI in Education Report, released today by K12 Academics, the largest education resource website online, 60% of teachers used AI in the 2024–25 school year — roughly double the year before — even as most report receiving no formal training to use it.
The report benchmarks adoption across K-12 and higher education. Among its findings: 54% of K-12 students and 92% of university students now use AI for schoolwork; 86% of education organizations use generative AI — the highest adoption rate of any industry; teachers who use AI weekly save an average of 5.9 hours a week; and 68% of teachers received no AI training. Meanwhile, roughly 34 states plus D.C. and Puerto Rico have issued AI guidance, but most district policies still don’t reference it.
“The story of AI in education has flipped from ‘who is using it’ to ‘how do we use it well.’ Adoption raced ahead of training and policy. The schools that win won’t be the ones using the most AI — they’ll be the ones pairing it with real literacy and governance,” said Chris Glavin, founder of K12 Academics.
The report also finds that the first instinct — catching AI use with detection tools — is failing, as detectors prove unreliable; the durable answer, it argues, is redesigning assessment around authentic, AI-aware tasks. It closes with the AI in Education Readiness Index, a K12 Academics framework for profiling how prepared a district or institution actually is.
